Global commodities mogul William Louis-Dreyfus, father of Emmy-winning actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, took out a full-page ad in Tuesday’sNew York Times announcing his $1M donation to ending voter suppression.

"It’s a damn outrage, and I don’t understand why everyone — Republican and Democrat alike — are not shocked to their shoe tops."

Aw, gee…thanks, Dad!  We agree.  This should not be perceived as a partisan issue, but as an issue for all voting and future voting Americans.  Let’s hope that more of the well-to-do follow his example.

Americans in some states are already going to have a hard enough time getting to the polls this November because of various forms of voter suppression.  Don’t be one of them!  You have 47 DAYS until Election 2012 to get yourself ready to cast your vote!  Go forth!

The state chapters of the League of Women Voters and the American Civil Liberties Union have sued the state of New Hampshire for overriding Governor John Lynch’s veto of a law that would inhibit out-of-state college students from voting locally unless they establish official residency.  This hastily implemented law is the kind of thing that gets Long Distance Voter - ESPECIALLY the CountMore project - chomping at the bit!

BREAKING NEWS!  BREAKING NEWS!  BREAKING NEWS!  We just wanted to make certain you realized the importance of this decision.  Two weeks ago, we asked our Facebook followers how they felt about the efforts that Jon Husted, Ohio Secretary of State, and other politicians in the state were leading to limit early voting hours in primarily Democratic counties.  Many cried foul and were outraged at what they considered voter suppression on the part of Ohio Republicans.  The opposition mobilized, seeking a Federal Court Order.  To avoid further conflict, the Secretary of State has instead chosen to stand down on his previous decision and allow local government officials to have the authority to set early voting hours.  This is a huge victory for those fighting to end voter suppression.  Long Distance Voter eats voter suppression for breakfast, so this is quite exciting.

What does McKayla Maroney hate as much as voter apathy?  Voter suppression.  Voting is for everyone.  We don’t want to even think about how she feels about Voter ID laws.

You know what is really not awesome? Voter suppression.

You know what IS really awesome? This very articulate PBS Frontline article detailing all of the ways voter suppression is alive and well in the three very competitive states of Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio. A really nifty all-you-need-to-know regarding the sneaky ways officials are trying to take the power out from the hands of voters. Pass it along!
